Espresso goes wrong quietly. A shot that looks about right in a cup can be half again as long as you meant it to be, and the grind usually gets the blame. This JoeFrex glass takes the guessing out of it: pull the shot straight into the glass, read the level against the mark, and you know where you stand before you change anything.

The markings

Two volumes are marked on the side: 22 ml for a single and 60 ml for a double. Watching the flow against them tells you about timing as well as volume. Reach 60 ml well before the shot has run its usual time and the grind is too coarse; still be short of the line when the crema turns pale and it is too fine.

Built for the job

It is proper glass rather than plastic: thick-walled, heat-resistant and weighted at the base, so it stands steady under the group head and takes a hot shot without complaint. At 4.5 x 4.5 x 6.5 cm it clears the spouts on most domestic machines and lives in a drawer rather than on the worktop. It is sold as a single glass.
