JoeFrex precision scale - espresso scale - 0.1 to 800 grams

Espresso is a recipe written in grams. The JoeFrex precision scale is a digital scale for exactly that job: it reads in 0.1 g steps and weighs up to 800 g. That resolution is fine enough to tell an 18.0 g dose from an 18.4 g one.

Dose and yield

Most espresso recipes come down to two numbers: how much ground coffee goes into the basket, and how much espresso comes out. Weigh the ground coffee first, then weigh the finished shot in the cup. If you work to a ratio of 1:2, for example, 18 g of coffee should give you around 36 g of espresso. With both numbers in front of you, you can see what changed when a shot tastes different from yesterday's, and correct it by adjusting one thing at a time.

More than the dose

The 800 g capacity leaves plenty of room above a single dose. You can weigh whole beans before they go into the grinder, which is handy if you grind one dose at a time, or put a cup on the scale and weigh the drink in it.
