An espresso martini is the ultimate blend of two worlds: the kick of coffee and the elegance of a cocktail. This classic from the 80s is still hugely popular and is the perfect way to end a dinner or start a stylish night out. With just a few ingredients, you can whip up a silky smooth coffee cocktail that impresses in no time.
What ingredients do you need for an espresso martini?
For one espresso martini, you’ll need:
- 45 ml vodka: a smooth variety works best
- 30 ml coffee liqueur: for example Kahlúa for that deep coffee flavour
- 30 ml fresh espresso: let it cool slightly before use
- Ice cubes: to shake the cocktail nice and cold
- 10 ml sugar syrup (optional): for a slightly sweeter touch
- 3 coffee beans: use the espresso beans as garnish
What you’ll need
You don’t need much to make an espresso martini, but the right tools make it a bit easier:
- Cocktail shaker
- Fine strainer
- Martini or coupe glass
- Espresso machine or percolator
How to make the perfect espresso martini
Step 1: Make a fresh espresso
Make a strong espresso (about 30 ml) with your espresso machine or percolator. Let the coffee cool for a few minutes so the cocktail won’t be too warm later.
Step 2: Fill the shaker
Pour the cooled espresso into a shaker, along with 45 ml vodka, 30 ml coffee liqueur and a handful of ice cubes. Want a slightly sweeter flavour? Add 10 ml sugar syrup as well.
Step 3: Shake vigorously
Close the shaker tightly and shake everything hard for about 15 to 20 seconds. This creates the famous foam layer on top of the espresso martini.
Step 4: Strain and garnish
Strain the cocktail through a fine sieve into a chilled martini or coupe glass. Garnish with three coffee beans in the centre for the classic look.
Variations on the Espresso Martini
With a hint of vanilla
Add a small splash of vanilla liqueur or a few drops of vanilla extract to the shaker. This gives a soft, sweet twist that subtly complements the coffee flavour.
Decaf version
Want to enjoy it in the evening without a sleepless night? Use a shot of decaffeinated espresso. The flavour stays full, but without the buzz.
Extra creamy version
Replace part of the vodka with a splash of coffee cream or cream liqueur, like Baileys. This makes the cocktail smoother and richer in flavour.
The espresso martini isn’t just any cocktail, it’s a stylish mix of energy and elegance. Serve it as an after-dinner treat or at a festive evening. This drink always impresses. Feel free to experiment with the variations and make it your own signature cocktail.
