Is coffee bad for your kidneys?


For healthy people, the short answer is: no, not if you drink in moderation. Several studies show that normal coffee consumption has no harmful effect on healthy kidneys.
Still, you often hear that coffee is diuretic or that it would “strain” your kidneys. That sounds worrying, especially if you drink several cups daily. So what’s the real story? The answer depends on your health, the amount of coffee you drink, and whether caffeine plays a role in your situation.

What do your kidneys actually do?
Your kidneys act as a filtering system for your body. They remove waste products from your blood, regulate your fluid balance, and ensure important minerals like sodium and potassium stay balanced.
Every day, your kidneys filter tens of litres of blood. What you don’t need leaves your body through your urine. That’s why many people think everything you drink, including coffee, directly affects your kidneys.
That’s partly true: everything you consume is eventually processed. But that doesn’t automatically mean coffee is harmful. Your kidneys are actually designed to handle fluids and substances like caffeine just fine, as long as they’re healthy.
Does coffee affect your kidneys?
Coffee contains caffeine, and that substance does affect your body. Caffeine can temporarily raise your blood pressure slightly and acts as a mild diuretic. The latter means you might need to pee a bit more often, especially if you’re not used to caffeine.
For healthy people, that’s no problem. Your kidneys simply adjust to this. Research even shows that moderate coffee consumption is not linked to an increased risk of kidney damage in healthy adults.
How much coffee is bad for your kidneys?
For most healthy adults, 3 to 4 cups of coffee per day is considered a normal, safe amount. That’s about 300 to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.
At these levels, there’s no evidence that coffee is harmful to healthy kidneys. Only with extremely high intake, think large amounts of caffeine per day, can your body experience issues like heart palpitations, sleep problems, or raised blood pressure. That’s not specifically about your kidneys, but your overall caffeine load.

Is caffeine bad for your kidneys?
