Espresso Martini: how to make this delicious coffee cocktail

An espresso martini is the perfect blend of two worlds: the kick of coffee and the elegance of a cocktail. This ‘80s classic is still hugely popular and makes the perfect finish to a dinner or a stylish start to a night out. With just a few ingredients, you can whip up a silky-smooth coffee cocktail in no time that’s sure to impress.
What ingredients do you need for an espresso martini?
For one espresso martini, you’ll need:
- 45 ml vodka: a smooth variety works best
- 30 ml coffee liqueur: for example Kahlúa for that deep coffee flavour
- 30 ml fresh espresso: let it cool slightly before using
- Ice cubes: to properly chill the cocktail while shaking
- 10 ml sugar syrup (optional): for a slightly sweeter touch
- 3 coffee beans: use espresso beans for garnish
Equipment
Making an espresso martini doesn’t require much, but the right tools make it that bit easier:
- Cocktail shaker
- Fine strainer
- Martini or coupe glass
- Espresso machine or percolator
How to make the perfect espresso martini
Step 1: Brew a fresh espresso
Make a strong espresso (about 30 ml) using your espresso machine or percolator. Let it cool for a few minutes so the cocktail doesn’t become too warm.
Step 2: Fill the shaker
Add the cooled espresso to a shaker along with 45 ml vodka, 30 ml coffee liqueur and a handful of ice cubes. Prefer a slightly sweeter taste? Add 10 ml sugar syrup as well.
Step 3: Shake well
Seal the shaker properly and shake vigorously for about 15 to 20 seconds. This creates the signature foam layer on top of the espresso martini.
Step 4: Pour and garnish
Strain the cocktail through a fine sieve into a chilled martini or coupe glass. Garnish with three coffee beans in the centre for that classic look.
Variations on the Espresso Martini
With a hint of vanilla
Add a small splash of vanilla liqueur or a few drops of vanilla extract to the shaker. This gives a smooth, sweet twist that nicely complements the coffee flavour.
Decaf version
Want to enjoy one in the evening without losing sleep? Use a shot of decaffeinated espresso. The flavour stays rich, just without the caffeine kick.
Extra creamy version
Replace part of the vodka with a splash of coffee cream or a cream liqueur such as Baileys. This makes the cocktail smoother and fuller in taste.
The espresso martini isn’t just any cocktail, it’s a stylish mix of energy and elegance. Serve it as an after-dinner treat or during a special night in. This drink always makes an impression. Feel free to experiment with the variations and create your own signature cocktail.
