Around the year 1700, the Spanish brought the coffee beans they found near Ethiopia to Honduras. Today, about 13 million kilos of special (organic and/or Fairtrade) coffee are produced in Honduras every year. From this, SUN coffee selects the best beans to import. The process: the coffee beans are picked in 3-5 rounds and washed with clean water. The beans are fully sun-dried. SUN roasts the coffee beans using the slow roast method in its own roastery, crafting delicious coffee.

Flavour: full of aroma with a slightly sweet, mild taste. Gives a great balance in your cup of coffee. This espresso roast is perfect for cappuccino, espresso or ristretto.

FAQ
Customer Questions
Where does the SUN Santa Rosa Dark Roast coffee come from?

This coffee comes from Honduras. Around the year 1700 the Spanish brought coffee plants from the region of Ethiopia to Honduras. These days around 13 million kilos of speciality, organic or Fairtrade coffee are produced there every year, from which SUN selects the best lots.

The beans are picked in three to five rounds, washed with clear water and one hundred percent sun dried. They then go to SUN in Zaandam, where they are roasted in their own roastery according to the slow roast process.

Is the SUN Santa Rosa Dark Roast decaffeinated?

No, this is regular coffee with caffeine. In the description you can read that part of the harvest from Honduras has its caffeine removed naturally with water and carbon, but that does not apply to this dark roast.

If you are looking for caffeine free coffee, choose a coffee that has decaf or caffeine free in the product name.

Which brewing method is the SUN Santa Rosa Dark Roast suitable for and what is the difference with the medium roast?

The dark roast is an espresso roast and is therefore intended for espresso, ristretto and cappuccino. It has a full aroma and a slightly sweet, mild taste that gives a good balance in your cup.

There is also a medium roast of the Santa Rosa. A darker roasted bean gives a fuller and more robust cup with less acidity, while a medium roast stays lighter and fresher. You get whole beans in a 1 kilo pack, so you grind them yourself in your bean to cup machine or espresso grinder.

What do Fairtrade and the organic certification on the SUN Santa Rosa coffee mean?

This coffee is Fairtrade certified and carries the European organic label with the code NL-BIO-01. Fairtrade stands for fair trading conditions and a minimum price for the farmers.

NL-BIO-01 is the code of the body that monitors organic certification in the Netherlands. The addition non-EU agriculture indicates that the coffee was grown outside the European Union, in this case in Honduras.

How do I best store a kilo of SUN Santa Rosa coffee beans?

Store the beans cool, dark and well sealed, for example in the original bag with the closure shut or in an airtight storage tin. Do not put coffee in the fridge, because it absorbs moisture and odours there.

With a one kilo bag we advise decanting a small amount into a tin for daily use each time and keeping the rest closed. That way the aroma of the beans stays intact for longer.
